Breast Reduction

Breast reduction surgery is designed to help women alleviate a number of concerns related to having overly large breasts, including:

  • Excessive sagging or drooping
  • Back, shoulder, and neck pain
  • Self-consciousness
  • Indentations caused by the bra-strap
  • Inability to wear certain types of clothing

The goal of breast reduction surgery is to correct these and other issues you may be experiencing because of breasts that are too large and having an effect on your appearance, self-esteem, and general comfort. At the time of your initial consultation, you will have an opportunity to discuss all aspects of breast reduction surgery and any specific concerns about your breasts with your selected LIPSG plastic surgeon. You will also be given the opportunity to see the possible outcome of your procedure before even stepping foot inside the operating room. With state-of-the-art 3-D Vectra imaging technology, our plastic surgeon can show you a computer-generated model incorporating photos and information compiled to form a graphic image of the likely results.

For men who are affected by overly large breasts, male breast reduction surgery (gynecomastia), is also available. Our doctors at LIPSG can provide effective breast reduction for men who are experiencing this common condition.

Some cases of breast reduction surgery may be covered by insurance. Our staff here at LIPSG will assist you with contacting your insurance representative to determine if your policy covers or partially covers breast reduction procedures.

Breast Reduction Procedure

Understand.com - 3D Patient EducationBreast reduction surgery is typically for those patients whose breasts are fully developed. Patients with certain medical conditions and those who are intending to breastfeed can discuss their options with a LIPSG plastic surgeon at the initial breast reduction surgery consultation.

During breast reduction, your LIPSG plastic surgeon will make an anchor-shaped incision from the area of the nipple down to the crease of the breast. Excess tissue, fat, and skin are removed, and the nipple and areola (the dark skin surrounding the nipple) are repositioned. The breasts are reshaped with skin from around the areola and the incisions are then closed.

Sometimes, liposuction is necessary in breast reduction procedures to eliminate excess fat from the armpit area. In some cases, liposuction alone may be the only technique necessary for breast reduction.

The entire breast reduction procedure is typically performed under general anesthesia and lasts from two to four hours. Breast reduction surgery can be performed on an out-patient basis. The Long Island Plastic Surgical Group has two, brand new technologically advanced operating rooms at our Garden City facility. These new rooms are accredited by the American Association for Accreditation of Ambulatory Surgery Facilities, Inc. (AAAASF), a distinction signifying the highest standard of care. Our operating facilities are fully staffed and equipped for breast surgery procedures, including breast reduction.

Breast Reduction Recovery

The plastic surgery team here at LIPSG will fit you with an elastic bandage or surgical bra designed to bind the breasts for a few days after surgery. This should facilitate the healing process and help to ensure the best results. If necessary, some patients may be provided drainage tubes to remove any excess fluid. Stitches are typically removed after one week; however, the surgical bra must be worn for about a month after the procedure. Patients can expect some discomfort, swelling, and bruising after breast reduction surgery. These side effects can be alleviated with medication. Normal daily routines can generally be resumed after about two weeks, although heavy lifting and strenuous activities should be avoided for at least three to four weeks after the procedure. Only the most advanced techniques are employed by our renowned team of surgeons and every effort will be made to minimize scars ensuring that any residual scarring can often be easily hidden by undergarments.
