Doctors From Long Island Plastic Surgical Group To Provide Life-Saving Medical Care in Haiti

Surgeons bring expertise and donated medical supplies aimed at preventing amputations and averting the next medical crisis in quake region

WHAT

Four surgeons from Long Island Plastic Surgical Group will leave for Haiti in the coming days to assist in the medical relief effort following the devastating earthquake. Two weeks after the quake, many victims are at risk of needing amputations due to untreated infections. LIPSG surgeons, experts in wound management, will focus on treating these wounds with the goal of avoiding amputation.

In addition to providing trauma and surgical expertise, the doctors are bringing humanitarian aid that includes donated medical equipment and supplies to treat the injured and prevent further spread of infection.

According to UNICEF, several thousand Haitians, an estimated 40 percent of whom are children, depend on five cross-border recovery centers for urgent medical needs. The LIPSG doctors will be working out of one of these facilities.

Participation in volunteer missions to impoverished areas is a core belief at LIPSG; doctors from the practice are active in or hold board positions with numerous humanitarian organizations such as Doctors without Borders, Smile Train and Interplast.

WHO/WHEN

The doctors are available for interview prior to their departure, with your on-the-ground-reporters, or upon their return.

WHERE

El Buen Samaritano Hospital, Jimani, Dominican Republic – one of the five cross-border recovery centers.
