Dr. Lee Dellon
Garden City, N.Y. --- The Long Island Plastic Surgical Group, the oldest plastic and reconstructive surgery facility in the United States, will honor the world-renowned plastic and reconstructive surgeon Dr. A. Lee Dellon, with the Eighth Annual John Knowles Swinburne Memorial Lecture Award. Dr Dellon will present a lecture on The Prevention of Ulceration and Amputation of Peripheral Nerves in Patients with Neuropathy. The lecture will be held on May 3, 2008 at 9 AM in the TWC room at Nassau University Medical Center.
“Dr. Swinburne was a prominent plastic surgeon in our community and a partner at Long Island Plastic Surgical Group in Garden City for his entire professional career,” stated Dr. Laurence Glickman, a plastic and reconstructive surgeon with the Long Island Plastic Surgical Group. “Dr. Swinburne was also a dedicated teacher, a man of abounding knowledge, and gifted in the art of photography and poetry. He was at his intellectual and professional zenith when he lost a valiant fight to cancer. To commemorate his life and career, we have founded a memorial lecture in his name. This year, we look forward to honoring Dr. A. Lee Dellon as our guest lecturer. Dr. Dellon resides in Baltimore, Maryland, and is a world renowned Plastic and Reconstructive surgeon.”
The Memorial Lecture Award is one component of an annual visiting professor lecture series named for Dr. John K. Swinburne. Dr. Swinburne served as Director of Resident Education of the Division of Plastic Surgery at Nassau University Medical Center from 1982-1988. He was a partner at Long Island Plastic Surgical Group for 25 years, until his untimely death from cancer in 2000. The lecture series is intended to educate both plastic surgery residents and plastic surgeons in the community. It was started by Dr. Laurence Glickman to honor the memory of his friend and former colleague.
The Lecture Series, now in its eighth year, offers plastic surgery residents the opportunity to meet and learn from specialists from across the country. Started in 1954, the Residency Program is largely supervised by the twelve Long Island Plastic Surgical Group physicians. It is the only plastic surgery residency program on Long Island, one of just 85 across the country.

SURVEY SHOWS NEARLY 11.7 MILLION COSMETIC PLASTIC SURGERY PROCEDURES IN 2007
Garden City, NY --- Kaveh Alizadeh, MD, a member of the American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS) and president of the Long Island Plastic Surgical Group, is among a group of approximately 2400 board-certified plastic surgeons in the U.S. who released their 11th annual cosmetic plastic surgery statistics this week. ASAPS, founded in 1967, is the world’s leading organization for cosmetic surgery education and research with members in the U.S., Canada and 32 other countries.
More than 14,000 questionnaires were mailed nationwide to a random sampling of board-certified doctors in three specialties most likely to perform several or more of the 39 top cosmetic procedures. Results of the survey were used to project national data on the number of cosmetic procedures in 2007, which totaled nearly 11.7 million. This figure is a 2 percent increase from 2006 and a 457 percent increase from 1997.
Plastic surgeons who are Active Members of ASAPS performed an average of 322 surgical procedures last year. Aesthetic Society members also performed an average of 839 nonsurgical procedures. Dr. Alizadeh has been an ASAPS member since 2004. He is certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery and specializes in cosmetic surgery of the face and the entire body.
“The results of this survey confirm that Americans continue to view cosmetic plastic surgery as an important way to enhance their quality of life,” says Dr. Alizadeh
The top five surgical procedures in 2007 were liposuction (456,828); breast augmentation (399,440); eyelid surgery (240,763); abdominoplasty (185,335); and breast reduction (153,087).
Women had 91 percent of all cosmetic procedures, a total of 10.6 million procedures. Men had 9 percent of all cosmetic procedures, nearly 1.1 million procedures. People ages 35-50 had 46 percent of all cosmetic procedures. Traditional racial and ethnic minorities including Hispanics, African-Americans and Asians accounted for 21 percent of the total number of procedures nationwide.
“There are many options in cosmetic surgery today, including minimally invasive procedures with little or no downtime that sometimes can delay the need for more extensive surgery,” says Dr. Alizadeh. “A qualified plastic surgeon, especially one who is a member of the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, can help determine which procedure will achieve the best results for each individual.”

LONG ISLAND PLASTIC SURGICAL GROUP LAUNCHES DOG BITE PREVENTION PROGRAM
Garden City, NY --- The Long Island Plastic Surgical Group (LIPSG) announced today that it has launched a dog bite prevention program, which will devote time and resources to educating children, parents, and teachers about how to avoid being the victims of dangerous, often disfiguring dog bites.
“I have performed extensive reconstructive surgery on children whose faces were disfigured by vicious dog bites,” stated Dr. Kaveh Alizadeh, president of LIPSG and an internationally recognized, board certified plastic and reconstructive surgeon. “It is, indeed, heart breaking to see a child’s innocent face disfigured. To help prevent such accidents, we have prepared a program of seminars, which we shall conduct at our Garden City offices, so that teachers and parents can educate children about how to avoid being victims of dog bites.”
“Children will be taught how to recognize potentially dangerous dogs, why they should not approach strange dogs, and what to do if bitten,” stated Dr. Alizadeh. “Unfortunately, too many children throughout the country are victims of dog bites. Our program is designed to diminish such occurrences.”
The doctors at Long Island Plastic Surgical Group have been performing reconstructive surgery on children for sixty years, accumulating a wealth of unparalleled knowledge and experience. In addition to its acclaimed work on behalf of dog bite victims, the doctors have performed hundreds of surgeries to correct cleft lips and palates and have also established a nationally renowned Burn Center and a Center for Facial Paralysis.

BEFORE YOU CHOOSE COSMETIC SURGERY: A PATIENT’S CHECK LIST
Garden City, NY --- The number of people who seek out cosmetic surgeons for face lifts, breast augmentations, nose re-shaping, tummy tucks, chin and cheek augmentations, facial implants, liposuction, and eye-lid surgery among various other surgical procedures is growing like never before. And it’s not just people who want to erase the signs of aging: there are plenty of young people, including teenagers who have the encouragement of their parents.
For many people, however, cosmetic surgery is inappropriate: those who have certain pre-existing medical conditions, those who acted upon an ill-considered impulse, or teenagers whose decisions were based upon group pressure.
For many others, however, cosmetic surgery is a thoughtful, life-enhancing choice. If one wants to improve one’s appearance and has considered all the variables, cosmetic surgery is an intelligent choice, which can significantly improve one’s life, including one’s self-image and psychological well being.
Dr. Kaveh Alizadeh, a highly esteemed board-certified plastic and reconstructive surgeon and president of the Long Island Surgical Group, the oldest such group in the United States, has compiled a list of what prospective patients should know before choosing cosmetic surgery.
“To begin, I tell prospective patients that if they choose to have a procedure in an office-based facility, they should make sure that it is accredited and has a safety record as good as the best nearby hospitals,” stated Dr. Alizadeh. “Second, one should make sure that one’s surgeon is board certified and rated as one of the best in his or her field.”
In addition, Dr. Alizadeh compiled the following check list:
The office-based surgical facility should be accredited (certified) by an accrediting agency, it should be licensed by the state, and/or Medicare certified.
The surgeon should have privileges at an accredited acute care hospital for the specific procedure being performed.
Patients undergoing procedures that involve sedation should be monitored by registered nursing personnel (certified anesthesiologists).
If general anesthesia is used, it should be administered by a board-certified anesthesiologist or certified registered nurse anesthetist.
The emergency equipment and anesthesia monitoring devices should be the equivalent to those necessary for the same procedure if performed in a hospital.
There should be a separate recovery area with monitoring equipment equivalent to that which available in a hospital.
Dr. Alizadeh also suggested that prospective patients may want to contact the following organizations in order to get information about their surgeon(s) and operating facilities:

NEW YORK PLASTIC SURGEON DONATES TIME TO HEAL LIVES IN INDIA
Garden City, NY --- - Dr. Tom Davenport, of the Long Island Plastic Surgical Group of Garden City, is in Dehradun, India providing free reconstructive surgery for impoverished children and adults who have clefts, disabling burns, and hand injuries. He is working with Interplast, a charitable group which, since 1969, has provided free life-changing surgery for children and adults who suffer from the problems that Dr. Davenport is treating.
“Long Island Plastic Surgical Group is proud of its extensive devotion to pro bono work, helping children and adults throughout the world achieve normal lives,” stated Dr. Kaveh Alizadeh, the president of LIPSG and one of the foremost plastic and reconstructive surgeons in the world. “We are all proud of the work that Dr. Davenport has undertaken, and it is an integral part of our mission as a group of humanitarian doctors, who believe that we have a moral obligation to be healers, especially to those in desperate need who cannot afford medical care.”
Dr. Alizadeh was recently commended for his extensive and life-saving work on behalf of disfigured war victims. “Millions of poor children around the world have no access to basic medical care, let alone the reconstructive plastic surgery they need to lead normal, productive lives,” said Dr. Alizadeh. “In addition, few plastic surgeons are available to perform the needed surgeries in the developing world. Dr. Davenport freely gives of his time, talent, and skills to benefit those who most need help.” “Interplast depends on volunteers like Davenport and the nearly 700 other medical volunteers who give their time to provide life-changing surgeries and to educate and empower local medical professionals,” said Dr. Scott Corlew, Interplast’s chief medical officer. Davenport also serves on Interplast’s surgery committee and was a Webster Fellow, working at Interplast sites in 2000-2001.
In Dehradun, the volunteers will be working with Dr. Yogi Aeron, local plastic surgeon and director of Interplast’s year-round Surgical Outreach Center, helping him with the extreme backlog of burn cases.
The Interplast team will help those who survive burns—restoring their ability to walk or use their hands through reconstructive surgery. The team is expected to provide 75 to 100 life-changing surgeries in Dehradun during their two-week stay, providing renewed hope and a second chance at life for those living in poverty.
