Skin Lesions
A skin lesion is an abnormal or superficial growth on the skin caused by a wide range of conditions or certain diseases. The major categories of skin lesions are primary and secondary. Primary skin lesions have variations in color or texture, often present at birth, such as moles or birthmarks. Primary skin lesions can also be acquired during a person’s lifetime as a result of allergic reactions, disease or environmental factors. Secondary skin lesions are changes that occur in the skin resulting from a pre-existing lesions brought on by natural progression or scratching.
The treatment process is individualized for each patient and based upon a patient's health, the primary type and cause of the legion. Removing the skin lesion is usually a quick and straightforward procedure. A local anesthetic is typically administered and the lesion is “shaved” down using a surgical blade or simply cut away. Depending on the size of the lesion, the area may require sutures after treatment.
