YAG Laser - Removal of Pigmented Lesions and Tattoos
The YAG laser greatly reduces or removes brown age spots, “liver spots,” freckles and other brown birthmarks. It is also very effective in significantly lightening or removing a wide variety of tattoo inks.
The specialized light produced by the YAG laser is absorbed by the pigmented lesion or the tattoo ink. This process destroys the treated area, without affecting the surrounding skin. The treated area may appear red for a short time before the skin returns to its natural color and texture.
Frequently Asked Questions
How many treatments will I need?
Most pigmented lesions are removed in one or two treatments. Deeper lesions may require more treatments.
Professional tattoos may require between 6-8 treatments, while amateur tattoos may require less. The number of treatments needed depends on a variety of factors, including the amount and type of ink used and the depth of the ink in the skin.
Will the pigmented lesion return?
Common pigmented lesions do not return. However, some birthmarks may return after a number of months or years. If this occurs, the procedure can be repeated.
Will my tattoo be removed completely?
Many tattoos completely disappear with YAG laser treatments. Generally, blue, black and red inks provide the best results. Oranges and purples usually fade dramatically, if not completely. Green and yellow inks are the most difficult to remove.
Is treatment with a YAG laser painful?
The sensation of a YAG laser treatment can be slightly uncomfortable. It has been described as similar to the snap of a rubber band. However, anesthesia creams are available, if needed. Immediately following treatment, there may be a slight burning sensation, similar to a light sunburn. Any discomfort normally disappears within a day or two.
