PRP Hair Restoration
Thinning hair is a common concern for both men and women, which can occur due to genetics, stress, or medical conditions such as alopecia. To help individuals suffering from this cosmetic condition, Long Island Plastic Surgical Group offers a variety of hair loss treatments to create the fuller, thicker hair patients desire. One of our breakthrough treatment options for hair restoration is the minimally invasive technique known as Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) therapy, also referred to as the Vampire Hair Regrowth method.
PRP therapy is an innovative technique that has been successfully used for other cosmetic treatment purposes, such as in the Vampire Facial® and Vampire Facelift®. This non-surgical method of hair regrowth has shown to be highly effective for patients with thinning hair. Ideal candidates for PRP-based hair therapy are those with healthy hair follicles that have become dormant over time. The solution is not intended for treating baldness since it is not designed to grow new hair.
PRP Hair Restoration Procedure
To begin PRP therapy for hair loss, a small sample of the patient’s blood is taken. This sample is spun in a centrifuge in order to separate the platelets and plasma, which are then carefully prepared for reinjection. One of our experienced plastic surgeons will then inject the prepared PRP concentrate into the target area of the scalp, which works to strengthen hair follicles and stimulate hair growth. If desired, the patient can have the area numbed prior to treatment to minimize potential discomfort.
The entire process can typically be completed within one hour, depending on the extent of the patient’s hair restoration needs. Most individuals can benefit from multiple sessions to achieve optimal results. In addition, follow-up treatments can be scheduled every six months to a year to help maintain the increase in hair growth for long-lasting results.
PRP Hair Restoration Recovery
No downtime is typically required following PRP therapy. Patients can return to their normal activities immediately after treatment. For the first 24 hours, patients may experience soreness and redness in their scalp, but this should quickly fade.
PRP Hair Restoration Results
As the PRP reactivates the patient’s dormant follicles, thicker hair should begin to grow at the target area. This is possible due to the growth hormones in the patient’s blood platelets, which act as a natural serum that stimulates the weak hair follicles. Over time, PRP therapy helps to improve the blood supply to the area and restores nutrients to the inactive hair follicles.
