This annual symposium is hosted by Long Island Plastic Surgical Group (LIPSG) in memory of Dr. John Knowles Swinburne, who was a partner at LIPSG for 25 years. The event is organized each year by Dr. Laurence Glickman. This past Saturday, 50 surgeons, residents and supporting medical professionals were in attendance.

Dr. Swinburne was a member of LIPSG from 1977 until his passing in 2000. He was an outstanding physician and teacher, a devoted father and colleague. Dr. Swinburne’s interest in Aesthetic Surgery, Trauma, Hand, Microsurgery and Wound Healing was an example to all of us who appreciate the scope and complexity of our craft.

This year, the esteemed Eduardo D. Rodriguez, MD, DDS of NYU Langone Medical Center was the guest lecturer.  His presentation was entitled “New Face, New Beginning.” Dr. Rodriguez and his team performed NYU Langone’s first face transplant in August 2015 on Patrick Hardison, a firefighter from Mississippi, who was severely burned in September 2001 in the line of duty. This case is widely recognized as the most extensive procedure of its kind to date – and the first performed in New York State.
