Acclaimed physician, celebrated teacher, and respected mentor, Roger L. Simpson, MD, MBA, FACS is set to retire from his clinical practice on July 1, 2024.

Known to many as “The Gentleman Plastic Surgeon,” Dr. Simpson has served patients throughout the greater New York metro area for over 40 years. During that time, he has positively impacted thousands of lives and created a legacy within the field of plastic surgery for his accomplishments as both a physician and an educator.

In 1964, Dr. Simpson left his hometown of Long Beach, NY to complete an undergraduate degree at Syracuse University. In 1974, he graduated Magna Cum Laude from the University of Brussels, School of Medicine before completing both his General Surgery and Plastic Surgery residencies at Nassau University Medical Center (NUMC) in East Meadow, NY. Dr. Simpson received certification from the American Board of Surgery in 1980 and the American Board of Plastic Surgery in 1981. Subsequently, he completed a prestigious fellowship in Hand Surgery at the Roosevelt Hospital Center in New York City in 1981, attaining the Certificate of Added Qualification in Hand Surgery.

Joining Long Island Plastic Surgical Group (known today as New York Plastic Surgical Group) in 1981, Dr. Simpson worked alongside the practice’s founding partners for many years before eventually holding the role of President for multiple terms (most recently from 2013-2018). As an integral part of the practice, Dr. Simpson continued the fundamental work of its founder, Dr. Leonard Rubin, in techniques of reanimation of the paralyzed face. In addition, from 1989-2022, Dr. Simpson took over for the acclaimed Dr. Rubin and served as the Director of the Residency Training Program in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at NUMC, in partnership with Stony Brook University. During that time, Dr. Simpson trained over 120 residents and burn fellows, many of whom have gone on to establish impressive careers throughout the United States.

Throughout his clinical career, Dr. Simpson held several positions at NUMC including Chief of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, Director of the Burn Center, and Chief of the Hand Surgery Service. Other positions of leadership include past President of the Medical Staff at NUMC and former Chief of Plastic Surgery at Mercy Hospital Medical Center in Rockville Centre. He currently serves on the Board of Directors of the Nassau County Firefighters Burn Center Foundation. 

Dr. Simpson has been recognized by Castle Connelly as a Top Doctor, featured as a Super Doctor in theNew York Times, and honored by numerous organizations as a both a hero in healthcare and a humanitarian. In addition, he regularly dedicated his time to medically underserved countries through volunteer missions with ReSurge International, a nonprofit humanitarian aid organization, where he served on the Board of Directors.

Dr. Simpson has addressed professional colleagues at numerous symposia and workshops throughout the U.S., Europe, and Asia. He has published his work in textbooks and professional and academic journals on topics relating to plastic and reconstructive surgery, facial paralysis, burn reconstruction, and hand surgery. His role as both a leader and educator will continue to influence the field of plastic surgery for decades to come.

Moving forward, Dr. Simpson plans to continue sharing his knowledge with future generations of physicians through writing, lecturing, and teaching. His expertise, bedside manner, and gentle nature have made an incredible impact on the lives of so many, and the world is undoubtedly a better place because of him.
