Matteo DiMartino was born with a lymphatic malformation that developed while he was still in the womb. His mother and father, Christina and Franco, found out about his condition just 14 weeks into the pregnancy. It was diagnosed as a Cystic Hygroma, which is the umbrella condition that lymphatic malformations are typically categorized under.

After a stressful and frightening pregnancy, Christina gave birth to Matteo and it quickly became apparent that the mass was growing at a much faster rate than they realized. The mass was so large, it appeared he had two chests.

As soon as Matteo was released from the NICU, his parents spent countless hours researching where they could find the best care for him. Their search led them to Dr. Rachel A. Ruotolo and a team of highly-skilled medical professionals to perform his surgery. Dr. Ruotolo is a board-certified plastic surgeon and partner at Long Island Plastic Surgical Group. She specializes in pediatric craniofacial surgery. After completing a successful surgery, both the DiMartino family and LIPSG wanted to spread the word about this rare condition by holding a press conference.
