Leland M. Deane, MD, a board-certified plastic surgeon at Long Island Plastic Surgical Group, provides details as to why abdominoplasty (tummy tuck surgery) has become such a common procedure.
Long Island, NY – According to Long Island plastic surgeon Leland Deane, MD, abdominoplasty (or tummy tuck) is such a popular procedure because it can restore not only a person’s confidence, but also the way they use their body. Most of the tummy tuck procedures Dr. Deane and other plastic surgeons perform at Long Island Plastic Surgical Group are for women who have had children, but they are also done for people who have experienced loss of weight. In both instances, Dr. Deane says tension is lost in the entire area from the lower rib cage to the upper thighs. The thighs and pubic area fall, the waste gets thick, and sometimes the entire pelvis can rotate forward. Dr. Deane notes how these changes can be impossible to reverse with exercise or sports.
Even though the patient has lost weight, Dr. Deane describes them as feeling “stuck” at their present weight, as they are unable to lose more weight because of inactivity. He mentions how many women after their pregnancies will feel that they have back pain and cannot enjoy the same degree of physical activity they did before having children. It is surprising to many of his patients that these changes after pregnancy can happen even if the patient is of a normal weight or underweight.
Over the last 20 years, Dr. Deane says the abdominoplasty procedure has evolved into a safe, affordable, and rewarding procedure that can restore patients to the way they were before children or weight gain. Dr. Deane highlights how, in most cases, the patient can be back to their regular routine within two weeks. Exercise is usually allowed after four weeks.
With the muscles and skin back in their proper positions and tension in the torso restored, the improvements after abdominoplasty typically happen early and continue over many months. Dr. Deane’s patients are able to stand more erect, and the pelvis may even tilt back into its proper position after one year. Patients often report back that the quality of their lives has improved beyond measure.
Dr. Deane stresses the importance of the consultation with a surgeon certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery, as it is the best way to learn more about the procedure and to see whether it is right for the individual. During the consultation, questions can be answered, and the surgeon can go into detail about the procedure and the expected outcomes. If desired, patients can request the doctor provide names of other patients who had the procedure and would like to share their experiences.
