L’Oreal’s SkinCeuticals division hosted an event on April 19th in New York City with 20 Russian Dermatologists to discuss the partnership with ReSurge International and their Pioneering Women in Reconstructive Surgery initiative. The surgeons from Long Island Plastic Surgical Group (LIPSG) contribute their support and expertise to ReSurge by providing education and training to international surgeons and residents. At the recent SkinCeuticals event, Dr. Tommaso Addona spoke to his commitment to ReSurge International, as a board member for the organization and as a partner at LIPSG.

Dr. Addona detailed cases from recent LIPSG missions and shared how these experiences are aligned with the practice’s mission—complex cases, with reconstructive and cosmetic care that improves patient’s lives. When LIPSG physicians are on ReSurge missions, they are training and educating medical professionals to handle similar cases long after they leave. In the words of Dr. Vincent DiGregorio, “Of all the things our practice does……this is the most important.”

Five billion people lack access to safe, timely surgical care.  Equality of medical training is essential to bridging this gap.  Today, there are only 3 female surgeons for every 1 million people in low-income countries, often due to a lack of access to significant technical training or obstacles to gaining acceptance in their field.  With its Pioneering Women In Reconstructive Surgery initiative, SkinCeuticals is making it its mission to correct this imbalance.

Through visiting educator programs, leadership training, support, and funding of supplies, the initiative helps female surgeons in developing countries both expand their knowledge and encourage other women to pursue reconstructive surgery – one of the more difficult specialties – as a career path.
