Hair Replacement Surgery
Long Island Plastic Surgical Group doctors work with each patient to assess the right hair replacement procedure based on the patient’s individual hair restoration goals. Some of the most popular hair transplantation and replacement techniques are:
Hair transplantation is accomplished by taking small hair-bearing skin grafts from the scalp and repositioning them onto areas that are balding or thinning. Hair grafting surgery is typically performed in stages over a period of months, allowing for a gradual replacement of hair.
Flap surgery for hair restoration involves taking a hair-bearing flap of skin from one area of the scalp to cover a large area of baldness. The bald area is removed and replaced with the skin flap, which remains attached to its original blood supply by a “tether” at one end. Flap surgery is typically used for replacement of large areas of hair loss. Flap surgery is designed to allow hair to continue to grow in areas of the scalp affected by hair loss and is known for its effectiveness and natural-looking results.
A technique commonly used in reconstructive surgery, tissue expansion has proven to be effective in hair replacement surgery and can provide results in a relatively quick amount of time. A balloon-like expander is placed beneath a hair-bearing area of the scalp next to the area of baldness, and then gradually inflated with a saline solution over a period of weeks. This process allows the skin to expand and grow new cells. After about two months, the expanded skin is relocated to the balding area, allowing hair to grow in a scalp-region previously affected by hair loss.
Scalp reduction is typically performed to cover areas of baldness at the back and/or top of the head. A balding area of the scalp is removed, and the surrounding hair-bearing skin is pulled together and sutured. Scalp reduction is often considered an advancement flap surgery because areas of hair-bearing skin are advanced (pulled forward) to fill in bald spots.
After Hair Replacement
Hair can usually be washed two days after surgery, and stitches are often removed after 7 to 10 days. Many patients are able to return to normal daily routines after a week. Patients who have received hair grafts will find that the new hair “falls out” within six weeks. It is important to remember that this is normal and, in nearly all cases, only temporary. In another five to six weeks, hair growth will typically resume at a rate of about one-half of an inch per month.
